Best time of the year to visit iceland

Ancient glaciers and craggy fjords have become more ethereal — and extremely Instagrammable — environments. Before booking your travel to this popular island nation, consider what you want to see and do on your trip, as the time of year can greatly influence what is available. Some attractions, such as Iceland's famous hot springs, are open all year, while natural phenomena such as the northern lights and the midnight sun may only be seen during certain months. The summer months, July and August, are the warmest in Iceland and have long been the most popular. With 24 hours of daylight, June attracts nearly as many tourists as the summer peak. However, poor weather (rain and strong winds) is not uncommon even throughout this season. Because of the island's changing environment, you can often experience all four seasons in a one day.

Because Iceland can be relatively mild until the first week of October, a vacation in September may be appropriate (most of the crowds have thinned as children return to school). May offers plenty of daylight for sightseeing as well as warmer temperatures. However, if you want to explore some of the more distant highlands and fjords, now is not the greatest time to go because some routes are still closed as they thaw from the winter snow. The greatest time to visit Iceland for serious hikers is during the summer, when all of the mountain roads are open and all of the most famous routes are accessible.
